Leading for Long-Term Literacy Program Success
Leading for literacy learning is among the most important jobs an administrator or curriculum coach has. In this session, you'll learn how one rural Wisconsin school consistently scores at the top of the state's report card without buying expensive programs or issuing mandates to teachers. At the heart of the success is a focus on helping students learn to (and love to) read, helping teachers use data as a tool for good, and welcoming the community into the literacy lives of children. You will walk away from this session motivated to make small tweaks to your school's literacy program that can have powerful effects. Join elementary school principal and former school literacy specialist and librarian, Rita Platt, to build collaborative literacy programs that help all of our students thrive in a culture of literacy.

Reactive, Proactive, Interactive: Which leader do you want to be?
Leadership is not about the name plate on the door, we all are leaders as we journey through our work day.  Many times we do not consider ourselves a leader because we do not have the title or position.  In today's education realm, we all need to be leaders everyday.  In this session, we will discover ways to manage up to our supervisors, students and vendors.  Jane will be sharing experiences, and asking attendees to give a situation that was a great way to show leadership as well as a situation we feel was a failure.  How we prepare, react and interact will be the tools attendees will take with them as they navigate the school year and the ever changing media center.

What's Love Got to Do With It? Trauma Informed Teaching Strategies That Work
If you are currently working in a school setting, chances are that you have seen an uptick in the number of children with intense emotional and behavioral needs. You have also, likely heard the term trauma-informed teaching. Educators are clamoring for solutions including tools and strategies to help students who are affected by traumatic experiences big and small. The bottom line is that until we meet a student’s emotional needs, s/he cannot learn. In this session, we will explore the whats, whys, and hows of trauma-informed teaching. Participants will learn about ACES (adverse childhood experiences) and assets to develop a lens for seeing and meeting student-needs. Specific and simple strategies will be shared. Participants will leave this session with ideas that can be immediately implemented in their schools to help students in the throes of a “meltdown” and to reduce the likelihood of future meltdowns, by building students’ toolboxes for self-regulating their emotions.

Global Literacy at Your Library
As part of a Global Literature grant, our district worked across grade levels to build the global literacy of students. We wanted all of our students to be exposed to a global perspective in our library media centers. Our district has 15% Somali population with many students that have come to school from refugee camps in Africa. We have students that speak English, Somali, Spanish, Arabic and Swahili. We included our community and the public library in our projects. In this session I will be sharing our school projects, title lists, global literature resources and books to browse that offer a global perspective.

Show Me the Money! Grants, Money Trees and Pots o' Gold
This session will include a discussion of resources for extra funding & materials for school libraries. This will include lists, links, samples, anecdotal tales, tips and tricks. Some sources, like grants from the state, Donors Choose or PTO may be obvious, but some of the nuances on how to maximize these funds may not be. We will also review some other sources of funding as well which are not necessarily conventional. The presenter has successfully gotten multiple tablets, books, robots, a 3D printer, programming money, shelving, supplies and more through grants and innovative funding solutions. The bottom line is that people, overall, want to support our school libraries. This session explores ways to harness this goodwill in ways to benefit our students and schools. People who are interested in becoming aware of additional resources, digging deeper into familiar ones, or are new to grants and funding beyond CSF and the school budget are the target audience.

10 Easy Tips to Increase your Students’ Love of Reading
This session will focus on how to increase students love of reading. In this day and age, where students are increasingly spending time in front of screens, it is essential that as educators and librarians we find a way to make reading fun and relevant. During my session time, I will discuss ten steps I have taken to try and increase students’ love of reading in my school. These steps range from the basics of how to talk to classroom teachers and parents about their child’s book choices, to how to arrange your library space to maximize student checkout. Also being covered are how to get the most out of reader’s advisory talks, how to get students to talk about books and even whole school reading programs such as One Book One School.

Three Paradigm-Shifting Ideas To Kickstart Your School's Digital Wellness Culture
Schools are struggling with students using phones during class to check social media, play games, text, and watch videos. Many schools feel their only recourse is to ban phones. Mr. Mercier argues that phone bans will be optimally effective if they are part of a larger initiative to create a school digital wellness culture. In this session he presents 3 new, breakthrough ideas that can help schools boldly launch a new digital wellness school culture. These ideas are very practical, yet at the same time they will have a powerful, symbolic psychological impact, signaling a major change in the school's priorities. Mr. Mercier will explain each idea in detail, provide implementation suggestions, and explain the deep psychological power of each to truly usher in a new spirit of healthy technology use --- a new digital wellness culture.

Keynote: Kristin Ziemke "Read the World - The Evolution of Learning in a Digital Age"
With the influx of mobile devices, multimedia websites, e-books, interactive graphics, and social media, there's no question that literacy is changing. But are we adjusting our pedagogy to adopt and adapt literacy instruction to meet the needs of today’s learner? In this new learning landscape, we rethink what it means to “read” and craft lessons that explicitly teach students to analyze a photo, closely read a video clip and read the world. We’ll investigate new entry points for all learners and share ideas for empowering students to author their own messages as content creators in this participatory digital culture.

Real-Life Literacy Learning: Student Authored Books, Free Book Stores, DEW Days, Author Visits, and Writer's Conferences
When students are passionate about literacy, they chose to engage in literacy-based activities. Educators know that when it comes to reading and writing, practice matters. Truly, the more students read and write, the better they read and write. The question is, how do we help students become passionate readers and writers? One important way is to help them see literacy as a real-world endeavor. When students meet favorite authors, publish their own books, develop home libraries, and are treated like authentic readers and writers in their own right, they are motivated. This motivation leads to passion. The Student Authored Books, Free Book Stores, DEW Days, Author Visits, and Writer's Conferences session, builds on the theory of offering students voice and choice as readers and writers by furthering their sense of agency. Teachers need tools and resources for offering multi-faceted, real-world literacy activities to their teaching. This session will help meet that need.

Breathing Life into Read Alouds
When you read a book aloud to listeners, you add a new layer of meaning to the story. The oral medium communicates in a way that the printed word can not. In this session we will discuss ways to take advantage of the characteristics of orality to breathe life into read-alouds. I base my list of characteristics on those discussed in Walter Ong’s book Orality and Literacy. I will present examples using short book sections. I also invite and encourage discussion from the audience. At the end of this session attendees will be able to name characteristics of orality. Attendees will also have strategies for using various characteristics of orality to enhance their read alouds.

Bringing your School PD Online
In this session, participants will learn to create in-district PD training sessions online using G-Suite for Education apps, Google Sites and Google Classroom. The skills presented in this session also model online instruction design for teachers of any grade level to use in their classrooms when creating blended learning lessons. Participants should be familiar with G-Suite tools. One of the biggest obstacles for teachers seeking professional development (PD) is time. With online PD, teachers can seek out PD at a time that works best. Bringing PD online also allows a greater time-frame than a traditional “sit-and-get” session. This makes it much easier to follow up with skills learned and measure how the PD skills have impacted student learning. Teachers can also seek out more relevant PD than traditional PD sessions which traditionally teaches one topic to all teachers. Thus leading to deeper meaning and more impact on classroom learning.

Creating Intentional Space to Talk about Immigration: An-All School Read Project
In 2018, 2,200 staff and students at James Madison Memorial High School (JMM) in Madison received a copy of Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from a Minneapolis High School to keep. This launched the school’s second year of an All-School Read program, with lunchtime, after school, and evening programming for a month to facilitate community conversations around immigration. In 2019, the organization Green Card Voices recorded stories of JMM students, which was recently published in a new book Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Madison and Milwaukee High Schools. Come to this session to learn: how staff and students at JMM planned this all-school read; about Green Card Voices publications and programs; and how you can start introducing your school community to talking about immigration in a meaningful way. We must create intentional spaces to learn about the many unique stories of immigrants, and this project and organization does just that.

Inspiring and Elevating Empathy with Empatico
Empatico is a free tool that connects classrooms around the world. Explore how to bring virtual connections to your classroom in an engaging, intentional and powerful manner. Catch a glimpse of an Empatico connection between a classroom in the United States and Serbia. Authentic learning activities presented will demonstrate how students practiced interpersonal skills that are critical for building cross-cultural relationships in life. Observe how a variety of EdTech platforms were used between two partner classrooms during virtual exchanges to increase student engagement, as well as teach and share about their daily life. Students were able to examine ideas from multiple viewpoints. Mutual understandings were cultivated through reflection circles as we discussed ways that our classrooms were both similar and different. Digital citizenship was always at the forefront of our virtual connections and the creation of media to share.

Oh No, the Tech isn't Working!: Quick, book based, tech-free activities for students in the library and classroom
We have all had a “Oh no, the Tech isn’t working!” moment in our classrooms and libraries. In fact, there are still many libraries and classrooms in North America that don’t have access to, or function with very limited technology. What can you do to engage your students and help promote literacy in these circumstances? Pull out a library book! This workshop will introduce you to books your school library/ media center might already have, as well as a few new books that lend themselves to excellent and interactive pen and paper literacy activities. This workshop encourages participation, so we invite attendees to come with a book suggestion and related activity to share with the group.
